This meal consists often of a Christmas turkey and is finished by a log
of Christmas in France. It can also be a question of a goose or foie gras.
It is often preceded by a seafood dish (oysters, etc). There is also a
tradition known as of the Thirteen desserts, in remembering Jesus and
his twelve apostles. This tradition comes from Provence. It is also the moment to prepare the socks or the shoes to be put close to the chimney or under the Christmas tree to make it possible to the Father Christmas to deliver the Christmas presents. Finally for the catholics, the midnight supper of Christmas is followed or cut by the midnight mass which still remains very popular in the collective spirit, even if it is more often known as at the beginning of evening than at midnight. With the return of the mass or midnight, it is of tradition which a child adds the character of the Jesus Child in the crib to mean that it was born. At midnight, it is common to celebrate a Merry Christmas and in certain families it is the moment to open the gifts. Other families will wait the next morning.
